Country ships about 6.55 million tonnes of rice in 2015

Volume of exported rice is estimated to reach 6.55 million tonnes in 2015, with high-end white rice and jasmine rice accounting for 47%, reported the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

According to VFA, in the final quarter of the year, the exported rice volume will hit 2.21 million tonnes, 200,000 tonnes higher than the target. This contributes to bringing the total figure for the whole year to 6.55 million tonnes, up hundreds of thousands of tonnes compared to the initial plan.

The main reason for the increase was that Vietnam’s traditional export markets, such as the Philippines, Indonesia and China, raised their purchases.

However, these are figures of exports through official channels, excluding China. VFA reported that illegal rice shipment to the market is anticipated to post about 1.5 million tonnes.

Over the past 11 months, the volume of high-end white rice for export made up nearly 28.5% of the country’s total, a year-on-year rise of nearly 36.5%, while jasmine rice occupied almost 23%, up 18.5%.
