The project has an investment of VND1.752 trillion (nearly US$80 million) and is being carried out under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.

The four sections have a total length of over 22.38 kilometres, beginning at An Khanh Commune, Chau Thanh District and ending at Thanh Thoi A Commune, Mo Cay Nam District. Two out of four sections have completed land clearance.

The project is expected to be carried out over 26 months.

Chairman of Chau Thanh District People’s Committee Le Quang Vinh said that the project would contribute to completing the traffic system on Highway 60 connecting Rach Mieu Bridge with Co Chien Bridge, meeting the high demand of transport on this route.

Highway 60 is a lifeline route for Ben Tre Province, playing an important role in economic development and the defence and security of the Mekong Delta region.

The Rach Mieu, Ham Luong and Co Chien Bridges have promoted trade links among Tien Giang, Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces, causing heavy flows of traffic. Therefore, once it is completed, the project to expand and upgrade the Highway 60 will reduce traffic congestion and open up opportunities for socio-economic development for localities in the region.
