The area, run by the Bac Lieu People’s Committee, covers around 419 hectares in Hiep Thanh Commune, Bac Lieu City, the province’s capital.

Its focus will be on applying and developing advanced technology in shrimp farming, from the production of different varieties of shrimp, to the farming process, food, shrimp processing, storage and transferring the technology that serves the shrimp sector of the province to the Ca Mau peninsular, the Mekong Delta region and to the rest of the country.

The agricultural area is responsible for implementing research and hi-tech application in the sector, as well as the testing and demonstrating of hi-tech shrimp production models and hosting research and experiments in shrimp farming models.

At the same time, the area will provide training for people serving Vietnam’s shrimp sector. It will also serve as a venue for events and exhibitions on shrimp farming technology, in the hope of attracting human resources and investment for the sector.

The shrimp farming complex will enjoy preferential policies in line with legal regulations on science and technology. The Government will also encourage science-technology organisations to perform research in the area.

In early February, PM Phuc asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop a plan for shrimp exports, targeting an increase in turnover of US$10 billion by 2025, contributing about 10% of the country's GDP.
