Task force established to promote public-private partnership in rice sector

ABO/NDO- The establishment of a public-private partnership (PPP) task force in the rice industry was formally announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) at a conference in Can Tho on March 3.

According to MARD, Vietnam’s agriculture, especially its rice sector, is transforming into a transparent, responsible and sustainable system that reduces emissions and adapts to climate change.

The ministry added it is formulating a scheme on 1 million hectares of low-emission high-quality rice.

The task force is committed to changing the competitiveness of Vietnam’s rice sector from price to quality, nutrition and sustainability.

It will also work to help transform Vietnam’s agriculture to one that integrates multiple values aligned with tourism development by increasing connection with farmers, thus enhancing the capacity to meet market demands and promoting access to retail channels in different markets.

At the conference, delegates from international organisations shared experience in low-emission rice production, women empowerment in climate change adaptation rice production models, and the application of new cultivation processes to enhance the yield and quality of rice.

The establishment of the rice PPP task force comes at the right time to help fulfil Vietnam’s commitments and enhance the added value of rice through value chains.

It will also help attract investment and modernise the food and agriculture system through the use of technology to bring benefits to Vietnamese farmers and agriculture.
