Vietnam wins two additional gold medals at AIMAG 2017

Weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh and long jumper Nguyen Tien Trong brought home two additional gold medals for Vietnam at the ongoing fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 2017), in Turkmenistan, on the night of September 19 (Vietnamese time).

After proving himself by winning the men’s 62kg title at the recent 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia, Vinh went on to live up to expectations as he beat eight competitors for the top honour in the same weight category at the AIMAG 2017.

In the snatch competition, Vinh was successful in all three weight levels of 128kg, 133kg and 136kg, thus cruising to the lead with 4kg more than the Turkmenistan lifter in second place.

The clean and jerk contest also saw Vinh’s absolute domination, as he successfully conquered the level of 166kg to be crowned champion with a total lift of 302kg.

This is the second gold medal won by Vietnamese weightlifters in this year’s Games, following Thach Kim Tuan’s supreme finish in the men’s 56kg category earlier on September 18.

With regards to the track and field competition, Nguyen Tien Trong, 20, surprised everyone by racking up the men’s long jump title with a distance of 7.48m, 3cm farther than that of the silver medalist, W. Amila of Sri Lanka.

Also on the evening of September 19, Le Tu Chinh and Nguyen Thi Hang added two respective silver medals in the women’s 60m and 400m dash to Vietnam’s tally. Jujitsu fighter Dao Le Thu Trang brought home another silver in the women’s combat category.

Concluding the second day of competition, Vietnam temporarily ranked eighth with three gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
