Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships kicks off

More than 125 wrestlers from seven countries in the Southeast Asian region are participating in the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Freestyle and Classical Wrestling Championships, which officially kicked off at Bac Ninh provincial multi-purpose stadium, on November 23.

The wrestlers from Vietnam, Malaysia, Lao, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines, will compete for 24 sets of medals in the men’s freestyle and classical categories and the women’s freestyle event.

According to Nguyen The Long, head of the wrestling department of the National Sports Administration, 48 Vietnamese athletes are highly appreciated with the participation of high achievement wrestlers selected from the national team and the provincial teams. Therefore, the tournament promises to bring the audience exciting competitions, he added.

The event is considered to be a chance to introduce and promote Bac Ninh’s landscape and the people of this region and to promote Vietnam in general to friends, domestic and national visitors.

The tournament also provides a good opportunity for wrestlers to hone their skills and gain competition experience.
