Workshop spotlights celebrated poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu

ABO/NDO - An international conference on Nguyen Dinh Chieu was held on June 29 as part of a series of events to mark the 200th birth anniversary of the celebrated poet, who was born in the southern province of Ben Tre.

The workshop saw the attendance of provincial leaders, representatives of central agencies, UNESCO’s chief in Vietnam Christian Manhart, and Indian Consul General Madan Mohan Sethi.
The organisers received 133 papers and selected 96, including 17 by foreign authors, for printing in its proceedings.

Various topics were discussed at the conference, including Nguyen Dinh Chieu’s poetry with the fate of the nation and people during wartime, his humane thinking and his progressive thoughts on human liberation as seen from his works.

The participants also looked at the cultural values and influence of Nguyen Dinh Chieu’s works, both in his time and today, as well as how to protect and promote the heritage of Nguyen Dinh Chieu in Vietnam and his hometown of Ben Tre in particular.

Last year, UNESCO issued a resolution on celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of Nguyen Dinh Chieu and the 250th birth anniversary of the female poet Ho Xuan Huong in 2022 along with other cultural celebrities around the world.

Nguyen Dinh Chieu is best known for the epic poem Luc Van Tien, written in the Nom scripts, where he conveyed Vietnam's traditional moral virtues through the eponymous main character.
