He also called on people to change their lifestyle and behaviour to contribute to protecting the environment and the harmony between man and nature for ourselves today and future generations tomorrow.

The Minister made the remarks at a meeting held in Ba Ria-Vung Tau on June 4 to launch the 2017 Action Month for Environment and to respond to World Environment Day (June 5).

Politburo member, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan emphasised that Vietnam is heavily affected by environmental pollution and climate change, including environmental incidents in central provinces over the past time, so the launch of the action month is highly important in strengthening the responsibility of the community in environmental protection and climate change adaptation.

He also told authorised agencies to closely monitor environmental protection work when accepting investment projects while prioritising projects using environmentally friendly technology.

Minister Ha said that the Ministry will revise and supplement the decree on environmental protection to put forth management tools to supervise operations of enterprises and punish those found to be polluting the environment.

On the occasion, the Ministry also presented the Vietnam Environment Awards to individuals and organisations contributing to environmental protection in 2017.

In addition, several activities will be held within the Action Month for Environment including an international exhibition and fair on environmental technology and ecological products in 2017; a seminar on the role of Vietnamese women in environmental and natural resources protection; and the launch of a tree planting programme and a photo contest on the environment; among others.
