Cho Ray Hospital wins eight Vietnamese records on organ transplant

The Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital has been honoured with eight individual and collective records in the field of medicine and organ transplants in Vietnam.

Recently, the Vietnam Society of Organ Transplantation (VSOT) in collaboration with Cho Ray Hospital organised the fourth Congress of VSOT in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital take a moment to commemorate donors before starting an organ transplant surgery.

At the event, the Vietnam Book of Records officially conferred the titles on the leading units and individuals in the transplant sector. This is the first time that a series of medical records have been set up at an event in order to honour individual and collective contributions in the field of medicine in Vietnam in general and organ transplants in particular.

Cho Ray Hospital was honoured with eight records for individuals and groups, including "the hospital that performed the first kidney transplant from a brain-death donor in Vietnam" in April 23, 2008 and “the first to carry out a kidney transplant procedure from a non-heart-beating donor in Vietnam" in June 18, 2015.

Cho Ray’s Department of Urology was awarded with the record of "the unit performs the most kidney transplants in Vietnam." As of September 30, 2017, the department had successfully performed 622 kidney transplants, including 588 kidney transplants from live donors, 31 cases from brain death and three from non-heart-beating donors. After more than 25 years of implementation, it is the unit that has performed the largest number of kidney transplants in Vietnam, providing a better life for patients with chronic renal failure.

Cho Ray Hospital Organ Transplant Coordination Unit received the record for "Organising the transport of the longest journey for a donated organ from South to North to save people" in September 2015, with an organ travelling 1,700km from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.

Prof., Dr. Tran Ngoc Sinh received two records for "Implementing the first kidney transplant from a brain-death donor in Vietnam" and "Carrying out the first kidney transplant from the first non-heart-beating donor in the country."

Dr. Du Thi Ngoc Thu, Head of Cho Ray Organ Transplant Coordination Unit was presented with the record for "Organising the longest transport route for a donated organ from South to North to save people."

Assoc. Prof., Dr. Thai Minh Sam, Head of Department of Urology, Cho Ray Hospital, was recognised with the record for "Implementing the first cross kidney transplant in Vietnam," performed in parallel on two patients in January 11, 2017.

The fourth Congress of VSOT is one of the annual activities to update people on the achievements in organ transplants across the country, as well as providing an opportunity for foreign experts to exchange their experiences in the field. The conference also devoted a part of its agenda to pay tribute to the humanity of organ donors.
