Activities mark 70th anniversary of Wounded and Fallen Soldiers' Day

A wide range of activities have been held across the country to mark the 70th anniversary of Wounded and Fallen Soldiers’ Day (July 27).

Senior Lieutenant General Luong Cuong, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army on July 21 visited and presented gifts to sick and wounded soldiers being cared at the Duy Tien nursing centre in northern Ha Nam province.

Senior Lieutenant General Luong Cuong expressed his deep gratitude to martyrs, invalids and their families for their great contributions and precious sacrifice in the struggle to defend the country’s independence.

On the same day, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh received a delegation of outstanding members of the Vietnam Association of Businesses of War Invalids and People with Disabilities.

The VP praised the association for arranging jobs with stable incomes for hundreds of thousands of members, contributing to local social economic development.

She affirmed that the Party, State and people always remember and are grateful for the contribution and sacrifice of generations of heroic martyrs and invalids and take responsibility for taking care of these people and their families.

Also on July 21, a delegation of the Party Committee of the Centrally-run Agencies bloc paid homage to fallen soldiers in Quang Tri.

On this occasion, the Party Committee of the centrally-run agencies bloc presented VND7 billion to help build 70 social houses for policy beneficiaries in Quang Tri.

They laid wreaths and offered incense at the Ancient Citadel of Quang Tri, the Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery and Road No.9 National Martyrs’ Cemetery.

The Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery is the resting place of over 10,000 soldiers from across Vietnam. Most of them were from Corps 559 – Truong Son Army Corps and lost their lives on the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the resistance war against the US.

More than 10,000 martyrs were also buried at the Road 9 National Martyrs’ Cemetery. They fought in the Road 9 battlefield and in Laos during a campaign of the anti-US war.

On July 21, at the Giai Phong Square in the central province of Quang Tri, the union of Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Soldiers in 1972 in co-ordination with the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha organised a ceremony to pay gratitude to soldiers who laid down their lives in the campaign to protect Quang Tri Citadel in 1972.

At the ceremony, the organising board mobilised over VND1 billion to help build houses and present gifts to families of wounded and fallen soldiers.

The Ancient Citadel of Quang Tri witnessed a fierce struggle to protect the citadel and Quang Tri township in 1972.

Thousands of soldiers laid down their lives during the 81-day battle. The fight contributed to Vietnam’s triumph at the Paris Conference and was a prerequisite for the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, which completely liberated the South and reunified the country.

On the occasion, localities nationwide took part in activities to commemorate heroic martyrs and care for policy beneficiaries.

In the northern province of Hai Duong, a meeting was organised to praise 24 individuals who stood out in the national revolutionary cause.

Central Quang Ngai province hosted a ceremony to commend 21 collectives and 81 individuals who rendered service to the nation.

The central city of Da Nang presented gifts to 2,400 relatives of war martyrs in the city.

Southern Tra Vinh province also presented gifts and 1,000 social houses to families of martyrs and invalids.
