Speaking at the conference, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong praised the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of Defence for obtaining significant achievements over recent years. The Commission has effectively advised the Party and State on the implementation of the resolution, which was adopted at the fourth plenum of the twelfth Party Central Committee, on enhancing the building and rectification of the Party and preventing and curbing ideological, ethical and lifestyle degradation, as well as the manifestation of “self-evolution” and “self-transformation” within the Party.

They have also fulfilled their role in directing and seriously implementing the Party and State’s guidelines on the building and solidifying of the all-people defence disposition and the people's security disposition. Research and the implementation of directives in a bid to build a regular, elite and modern people's revolutionary army have also been stepped up.

He also highlighted the close co-ordination between the commission, the Defence Ministry and security forces in maintaining political security, social order and safety on a national scale.

In addition, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of Defence have also directed the effective implementation of international integration and defence foreign affairs, contributing to consolidating a peaceful and stable environment for national construction and defence, he noted.

The army has successfully fulfilled its role as a key force in the prevention and overcoming of consequences of natural disasters, in addition to actively participating in rescue activities, he added.

General Secretary Trong emphasised that in the time ahead, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of Defence should continue to seriously implement all directives and resolutions of the Party Central Committee; as well as the objectives and tasks adopted at the 10th Vietnam People's Army's Party Congress.

More effective measures should be devised to manage and command the Army, improve the quality of training, combat readiness, and discipline in order to ensure that the Army fulfils all of the assigned political tasks and acts as a core force in firmly protecting the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Fatherland, whilst protecting the Party, the people and the socialist regime.
