On behalf of the leaders of the Ministry of Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Deputy Minister of Defence, briefed President Tran Dai Quang on the performance of the military and defence tasks in 2017.

The Ministry has focused on a number of missions assigned to it by the Party, State and people, including the continued building of a revolutionary, regular, elite and modern people’s army.

Speaking at the session, the President praised the achievements that the ministry has obtained in leading the implementation of military missions over recent years, including the effective performance of its functions in advising the Party on national defence and military affairs and the implementation of protection over territorial sovereignty, contributing to maintaining an environment of peace and national political security.

Military officers and soldiers have overcome numerous difficulties to fulfil their duties amid complicated developments in the region and the world, the increasing activities of hostile forces against the Party and State, and the frequent occurrences of natural disasters, the State leader noted.

He urged the ministry’ leaders to continue comprehensively renewing their leadership and instructions on implementing the national defence tasks and policies, in addition to taking effective measures in order to raise combat readiness and meet new demands, and to successfully accomplish the tasks entrusted to them by the Party, State and people.

President Quang also stressed the need to closely coordinate with public security and other forces to defeat all hostile forces’ sabotage schemes and activities; maintain political security and social order and safety; and ensure security during important events such as the upcoming 2017 APEC Summit.
