Creating jobs to increase income for leisure workers

ABO - Tan Phu Dong district in Tien Giang province has striven to improve the value of industrial production - cottage industry and handicraft (industry-handicraft), contributing to solving the situation of off-farm labor, increasing incomes for people, etc... In particular, handicrafts in rural areas are focused by the district.

In Tan Phu Dong district, there are currently 92 industrial and small-scale production establishments with a production value of more than 25 billion VND in 2019. In particular, there are 15 facilities processing plastic knitting items for export, creating jobs for nearly 300 leisure workers, with an average income from 2.5 to 3.5 million VND/person/month.

In 2019, the district has established and put into operation Phu Thanh industrial sewing establishment in Phu Thanh commune and Kim Phuong industrial sewing facility in Tan Phu commune, creating jobs for 90 laborers, with a salary from 4.5 to 6 million VND/person/month. There are now 19 industrial sewing establishments in the whole district, contributing to creating jobs for nearly 500 idle laborers in the locality.

In the district, there is also a job of binding coconut broom sticks. In particular, Giong Keo hamlet in Phu Thanh commune has about 50 households practicing coconut sticks. Last time, coconut broom sticks products were often improved design as well as quality so the price was relatively stable. With an average of 30 to 40 brooms/day, each person can squeeze about 200 thousand VND/day. This job has contributed to creating jobs, helping to increase income for many of the local farm workers.

Addition, Tan Dinh hamlet of Tan Thoi commune develops a variety of crafts. There are 150 households to make crafts, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the total number of households in the hamlet, including such as knitting water hyacinth, making plastic chairs, sewing processing, etc... Most handicraft products are produced here for export so the output is quite stable, ensuring income for workers.

In order to create favorable conditions for the locality to develop small-scale handicrafts, over time, the Tien Giang Industrial Encouragement Fund has provided capital to an industrial and small-scale handicraft production establishment in the district. In addition, the district has also established a number of cooperative economic models, etc…

However, due to difficult conditions of capital and human resources, the operation of cooperative groups has not been effective. Therefore, all levels and functional sectors need to pay attention to support for small-scale industry-handicraft production establishments as well as handicraft households to expand production scale.

In the immediate future, it is necessary to consolidate and improve the quality as well as establish more cooperative groups so that the traditional handicrafts in the district have conditions for sustainable development, contributing to creating jobs for farm workers and improving incomes for local people.
