President commemorates hero Hoang Dieu at Thang Long Citadel

ABO/NDO - President Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a ceremony at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel on April 8, commemorating Hoang Dieu, who sacrificed himself in battle to protect the Hanoi Citadel 140 years ago.

At the event, President Phuc and Hanoi leaders expressed their gratitude to the governor-general of Hanoi for his contributions defending the nation.

Hoang Dieu was born in 1829 into a scholarly family in the central province of Quang Nam. He held various posts in the Nguyen court and was named governor-general of Ha Ninh, which encompassed Hanoi and the surrounding areas.

During the second French assault against Hanoi in April 1882, Hoang Dieu and his troops fought bravely to defend the citadel despite the Nguyen court’s surrender.

When the citadel fell, he committed suicide as an act to preserve his integrity of dying rather than submitting to the enemy.
