Work begins on project to revive Ho Chi Minh City's longest canal

ABO/NDO- Ho Chi Minh City has kicked off a project to improve the environment and build roads along the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len Canal, which runs north-south through the city’s seven districts.

The project will involve dredging and embankment work on 32 kilometres of the waterway, three times longer than the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, which also underwent extensive upgrade about ten years ago.

Accordingly, the width of the canal will be widened to 30 metres, for the section from Phu Dinh Port to Truong Dai Bridge, and 40 metres for the section from Truong Dai Bridge to the Saigon River.

In addition to the canal renovation work, the city will also build roads up to 12 metres wide, with 3-metre-wide pavement along the canal, as well as 12 wharves and three bridges across the canal.

The project has a total cost of 8.2 trillion VND (344.3 million USD), half of which is funded by the central budget. The work is scheduled for completion in 2025.

According to municipal officials, the project will not only help with drainage and tackle pollution for an area of 14,900 hectares but also strengthen the north-south transport link and revitalise waterway transport between the southeastern and southwestern provinces.

The project to improve the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len Canal is a key part of Ho Chi Minh City’s scheme on flooding prevention and wastewater treatment for the 2020-2045 period.
