The event was part of a series of activities on the threshold of the 50th founding anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties (June 24, 1967).

Addressing the ceremony, Governor of Preah Vihear Province and Vice President of the provincial committee of the Solidarity Front for the Development of the Cambodian Motherland Long Savann affirmed that people in Preah Vihear, as well as in Cambodia generally, always keep in mind the enormous support of Vietnam’s volunteer soldiers who helped their country defeat Pol Pot’s genocidal régime and contribute to its national development as at present.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietnam’s Defence Attaché, Nguyen Anh Dung, said the restoration of the friendship monument was evidence of the growing traditional solidarity and amity.

He also called on the younger generations of the two nations to join hands in nurturing this friendship.

The rehabilitation was part of a project to restore Vietnam-Cambodia friendship monuments in Cambodia. The project is funded by Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence and carried out in coordination with the Solidarity Front for the Development of the Cambodian Motherland.
