August CPI increases slightly

The consumer price index in August rose 0.22% against the previous month, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The increase was mainly attributed to high rice demand for export, according to Do Thi Ngoc, Deputy Head of GSO Price Statistics Department.

Rice exporters in the South are purchasing around two million tons for signed contracts, said the GSO, adding that Viet Nam exported 3.6 million tons of rice as of July 31.

Prices of foodstuff like pig, cow, and chicken meat and fresh aquatic products also normally went up in the seven lunar month when families prepared offerings to express their gratefulness and appreciation to their dead parents and ancestors on the occasion of the Buddhist festival Vu Lan.

Official statistics showed the prices of gold and US dollar decreased by 0.34% and 0.26%, respectively, in August.
