Vegetable and fruit exports to EU rise sharply to EU

The increase in EU consumers’ demand for Vietnamese fruit and vegetables was affirmed by representatives in a seminar discussing opportunities and new challenges in the EU market and the demand from typical markets, has just organised by the Trade Promotion Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to the Trade Promotion Department, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export turnover to the EU has continued to increase in recent years. Specifically, in 2010, the country saw 28% in the turnover to the market while the figure hit USD1.04 billion in 2014.

Vietnam’s popular consumable exports to the market are pineapple, dragon fruits, coconut cooked rice, tropical fruits such as banana and coconut which are popular in the EU. In addition, other tropical fruits such as avocado, mango, guava and custard-apple are gaining popularity.

At the seminar, it was said that Vietnam now has many opportunities to intensify agricultural exports to the EU. Mr. Nguyen Manh Dung, Head of the Processing Division under Department of Processing and Trade for Agro-forestry-Fisheries Products and Salt Production said that Vietnam’s major export products largely consumed in the EU are coffee, tea, spice, fruits and pepper.

The EU is traditionally the biggest market for Vietnam’s coffee with nearly 40% of the export market share with a value of USD800,000 a year.

Vietnamese cashew nuts find their way to the EU as the third largest importer from Vietnam, accounting for about 27% of the total market..
