Construction of Phu Quoc International Passenger Port begins

The construction of the Phu Quoc International Passenger Port began at a ceremony held in Duong Dong town, Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province on April 29.

The port will be built on a 180ha area, including 2.8ha on land for a terminal and supporting facilities, and 176.5ha of water area of docks and jetties.

The VND1.6 trillion (US$75.5 million) project will follow the Build-Operation-Transfer model. Phu Quoc Tourism Investment and Development JSC has invested VND493 billion (US$22.6 million), and over VND1.1 trillion (US$53 million) has been sourced from the State budget.

The port is scheduled to be completed in January 2017. It will serve passenger 225,000 GT ships carrying from 5,000 to 6,000 passengers in the front, while the back will serve smaller ships with a capacity up to 20,000 DWT.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Transportation Dinh La Thanh stressed the port’s significance in boosting Phu Quoc island’s tourism and promoting tourism on the island and in the country.

The port is expected to create favourable conditions for transportation links, contributing to socio-economic development and giving the locality a facelift.
