The project, implemented by the Yen Khanh Company under the build-operate-transfer model, is expected to make travel easier between central HCMC and the Trung Luong Expressway, a major route to the south-western provinces.

Construction has been estimated to cost nearly VND1.6 trillion (US$72 million) and is scheduled for completion in 2017.

In the initial stage, each roadway will have four lanes with a total width of 14.5 metres while the central reservation is designed to be a grassed area and will later be converted into road.

The new road also includes two grade-separation junctions at its two ends and two pedestrian flyovers.

At the ground-breaking ceremony on October 25, Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai underlined the significance of the new motorway in helping to modernise the city’s infrastructure and reduce congestion on the current connecting road which is part of National Highway 1.

He asked the project owner to work closely with local authorities to ensure site clearance is on schedule and to supervise the construction progress strictly to minimise adverse impacts on the environment.
