Tien Giang planted 1,000 hectares water-melon for Year of the Monkey 2016

Farmers in Tien Giang province planted nearly 1,000 water-melon for Year of the Monkey 2016, an increase of 150-180 hectares in comparison with the same previous last year.

Water-melon is planted and grown prosporously in most of areas where has traditions planted watermelon such as: Cho Gao district, Go Cong Dong district, Go Cong Tay district, etc…In addition, famers in Tan Phuoc district and Chau Thanh district also replace cultivating rice with planting water-melon because of the lack of water in dry season. This area is about 300 hectares. Most of farmers choose a long melon variety to achieve high productivity and quality to meet the need of consumers. There is 20 percent of total area planted a traditonal round melon variety for decoration on an occassion of Tet.

According to agricultural officials, if farmers take good care of water-melon, each hecta of water-melon can harvest 25 to 30 tons of melon after growing about 65 days. With price fluctuates between VND 4,000-VND 6,000 per one kilogram as now, farmer can profit VND 40 million-VND 60 million per one hecta planted water-melon after deducting expenses.
