Accordingly, the Deputy PM asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to quickly build a strategy for rice export and assess the implementation of Decree 109/2010/ND-CP on trading and exporting rice, to report to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc in June.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was urged to conduct specific assessment on the impacts of natural disasters, drought and salt intrusion on rice production; to regularly review and update the balance capacity of rice supply and continuously associate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to control rice export; and to ensure local food security and efficiency of rice export activities.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), as of May 18th, rice export volume reached over 2.07 million tonnes, valued at USD875 million (FOB price) and USD911.9 million (CIF price), up 15% in both volume and value over a year earlier.
Rice export in the second quarter is expected to reach 1.5 million tonnes, down 100,000 tonnes from the plan.
In April, rice export volume only hit 453,000 tonnes, worth USD212 million (FOB price), down 20.5% in volume and 7.5% in value from the previous month. Compared to the same period of the year, the figures declined 30% in volume and 21.33% in value.
