Mekong Delta sustainable development solutions proposed

A conference the theme ‘Mekong Delta – Active Integration and Sustainable Development’ opened in Hau Giang province on July 12.

The conference, held jointly by the Southwest Steering Committee (SSC), the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Hau Giang provincial People’s Committee was chaired by Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, who is also Head of the SSC.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy PM asked ministries, sectors and scientists to thoroughly research mechanisms to help the Mekong Delta region develop in a sustainable and more effective manner.

The study should be realistic and accurate, specifically on the impacts of international integration and climate change on a number of agricultural products commodities in the region, he noted.

Master plans and development scenarios for the Mekong Delta should also be reviewed to suit the specific situation in the region in the context of deeper international integration and climate change, Deputy PM Hue said.

Delegates at the conference also mentioned impacts of the current drought and saltwater intrusion in the region.

They shared the opinion that farmers and enterprises in the Mekong Delta region are facing many difficulties and challenges in the face of Vietnam’s deepening integration in the global economy.

Some experts also proposed that reforming administrative procedures, improving the quality of human resources and increasing the application of technology are keys to the successful international integration and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region.

The conference is a side-lines activity of the Mekong Delta Economic Co-operation (MDEC) forum, which aims to promote investment, co-operation, science and technology development, and international economic integration.
