This is the first time Vietnam has exported mangos to the country after seven years of negotiations for the approval of Australia’s Department of Agriculture.
To be able to ship the fruit to the country, Agricare Vietnam worked with farmers in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap to plant mangos in line with the Vietnam Good Agricultural Practice (VietGAP) standard.
Mango cultivation also had to meet Australia’s strict requirements relating to production stages, packing, phyto-quarantine and food safety, irradiation and transport.
Vietnamese Consul General to Perth Phung The Long said Vietnam’s fresh mangos had attracted interest and received a positive response from consumers in the state, especially Vietnamese expats.
Vietnam began exporting fresh lychee to Australia in June of last year, the first time the fruit gained entry into the market.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam said it was hoped that the shipment of the second kind of fresh fruit to Australia would create opportunities for the country’s other fruits to make inroads into the market.
Australia is also buying mangos from Thailand and Mexico. The country will purchase more mangos from Vietnam to meet increasing local demand during the period from mid-March to late-May annually.
