Discussing solutions to restore the star apple

On October 9, Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a meeting to discuss solutions to overcome the status of dead star apple and unify process of commercial production of star apple for exporting to the US market.

The province has only 500 hectares planted star apple, descreasing 5 to 6 times than the previous two years. This area is still decreasing due to dried branch and root rot. In addition, the area from 2016 to present, the yield of star apple is also reduced significantly due to fruit rot. Meanwhile, Vietnamese fresh star apple milk has just been allowed to enter the US market. This opens the new prospect for star apple, etc...

Therefore, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Tien Giang called for farmers and businesses to restore linkage with solutions such as: To select new areas or improve the area of aging milk; to strictly apply cultivation techniques such as strengthening the irrigation system, using fertilizers and pesticides in a rational manner, especially in case of abuse of chemical fertilizers, which can easily lead to root rot, etc...

In addition, dairy growers need to pay attention to food hygiene requirements such as: registration of production certificates under Global GAP or VietGAP; particularly, purchasing enterprises must have pre-processing houses, packing and post-harvest preservation satisfying food hygiene and safety requirements; and cooperation with peasants to build star apple safety chains from production to consumed to meet the strict requirements of the US market, while supporting capital, technology transfer to farmers.

According to the plan, at the end of 2017, Tien Giang province will export the first batch of star apple to meet the requirements of food hygiene to the US market.
