Checking the implementation of the large rice field in Go Cong Tay district

On November 21, the provincial delegation, led by Acting Director of Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Van Hoa, worked with Go Cong Tay district on results of the implementation the large rice field in 2017 and the plan of 2018.

In 2017, Go Cong Tay district has 11 communes involved in large fields, producing nearly 2,430 hectares of rice, exceeding 130% of the plan. Participating in the large field, farmers are provided agricultural products by the HK Ltd.Co, the transfer agricultural technology. The company also underwrites products at market prices, especially the management closely monitored by local authorities.

Since then, the productivity of the large field has been higher than that of small-scale production such as reducing production cost from 10 to 15%, reducing post-harvest losses by 7%, increasing profit by 10%. Especially, the big field model brings about social efficiency such as changing the habit of small-scale production, high-quality production, formulating advanced cultivation methods, synchronizing mechanics reduce labor, overcoming difficulties in consumption, actively contributing to building new rural areas, etc…

In the winter-spring 2018 season, Go Cong Tay district is expected to expand the area of large rice field to 2,500 hectares per 3 crops, accounting for about 25% of the total rice area of the district. In order to implement the model of high effectiveness, the district set up the Steering Committee to inspect, urge and promptly handle problems arising in the relationship between farmers and enterprises; to strengthen the irrigation system, roads, etc... with the goal to increase income for rice farmers over 15%.

Speaking at the working session, Acting Director of Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Van Hoa asserted that large field is the most advanced method of rice production, so Go Cong Tay district should continue to maintain and support farmers to expand the area. At the same time, it is neccessaty to set up cooperative groups and cooperatives to produce rice in the big field so that rice production can be more sustainable.
