On November 28, the Tien Giang provincial People's Committee (PPC) co-ordinated with the Indian Embassy in Hanoi to hold a workshop on agricultural cooperation between India and the Mekong Delta provinces.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chairman of the PPC Le Van Huong stressed that the Mekong Delta is the largest granary of the country. It is also the key areas of fruit and vegetable production and farming, sea food processing. Every year, the region contributes about 90% of rice production, 70% of fruit production, 60% of seafood export turnover nationwide. Therefore, it can be said that the Mekong Delta plays a very important role in ensuring national food security and is a large material area in the global supply chain of agricultural products. Therefore, the workshop will be a forum to connect Indian agencies and businesses with Mekong Delta agencies and enterprises and Ho Chi Minh City in many fields, notably agricultural and fishery field.

After the opening speech of Chairman of the PPC, the workshop conducted two plenary sessions. The first session was entitled "Looking back on the development of agriculture and fisheries in the Mekong Delta and the opportunity to cooperate with India in agricultural and fishery development" and the second plenary session was "Policy dialogue".

Acting Director of Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Van Hoa said: Tien Giang is a province with strong agricultural development with rice as a major food plant. The planted area is about 220,000 hectares annually, producing 1.3 million tons; In addition, fruit trees have an area of 73,000 hectares, yielding over 1.3 million tons every year. For livestock and fisheries, Tien Giang also has significant development. With its potential and advantages, Tien Giang hopes to cooperate with India on hi-tech agricultural human resources and cooperate in researching, applying and transferring high technology agriculture.
In addition, the workshop also received much attention from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cantho Branch, Southern Fruit Institute, agencies of the Mekong Delta and India, etc...
Also at the seminar, through policy dialogue, Indian businesses studied more clearly about the preferential policies and investment projects calling for investment in the Mekong Delta provinces. At the same time, through the forum, domestic agencies and enterprises learnt about policies on tariffs, technical barriers, conditions for investment incentives, logistics services, importers and exporters of goods and services, etc... to serve the import and export of goods to India and vice versa.
