Tien Giang provincial People's Committee finds solutions to buy rice in winter-spring crop

ABO - On February 22, Deputy Chairman of Tien Giang provincial People's Committee chaired an emergency meeting to find solutions to promote the purchase of winter-spring rice crop 2018-2019, with the participation of local leaders, businesses and agricultural, industrial and banking sectors.

On the winter-spring rice crop this year, farmers in Tien Giang province seeded about 64,700 hectares and so far, nearly 20,000 hectares have been harvested with the average yield as estimated at 69 quintals/hectare.

Farmers currently have sold IR50404 fresh rice in the field at 4,300 VND to 4,400 VND/kg; Dai Thom and Jasmine rice from 4,800 VND to 4,900 VND/kg; OM 5451 rice, OM 4900 from 4,400 VND to 4,500 VND/kg, etc...

With this price, it was lower from 900 VND to 1,450 VND/kg depending on the type of rice variety, in comparison with the same period last year. According to the forecasts of the professional sectors, in the coming time, rice prices will continue to decline due to winter-spring rice in Tien Giang province and provinces in the Mekong Delta region entering the harvest time.

According to enterprises purchasing rice, the reason for the decrease in winter-spring rice price is difficult output, the demand for rice consumption in the world market decreases. On the other hand, rice in the field is mass harvest while businesses face difficulties in capital in purchasing temporary storage.

Enterprises proposed the Government to quickly implement the policy of purchasing temporary storage rice; the bank increased the lending rate and reduced the interest rate so that enterprises could focus on buying rice on the field until the end of March 2019.

The Tien Giang provincial People's Committee directed industries to create favorable conditions for businesses to buy rice; at the same time, asking the Government to implement the policy of purchasing rice for storage with the most favorable price for farmers.

Particularly Tien Giang Food Company, immediately after the meeting, the company would proceed to purchase a large amount of temporarily stored rice, in order to contribute to freeing the remaining rice production in the population.
