Vegetables and fruit tree gets higher economic than rice in winter-spring crop

ABO - On April 12, Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development organized a conference to review production and cultivation of the winter-spring crop of 2018 -2019.

In the past winter-spring crop 2018, Tien Giang province seeded more than 64,700 hectares of rice, the total output reached more than 450,000 tons, equal to 90% compared to the same period last year. Famer planted more than 29,700 hectares of vegetables of all kinds, the total output reached over 500,000 tons; fruit trees reached more than 77,700 hectares, production reached nearly 400,000 tons.

Although the cost of rice production in the winter-spring crop this year decreased by 1.5 million VND/hectare in comparison with  the previous year, the profit dropped by about 7.7 million VND/hetare due to low productivity and price. Particularly, the economic efficiency of vegetables and fruit trees was higher than the same period last year.

According to the plan, from now until the end of 2019, Tien Giang province will continue to cultivate about 124,000 hectares of rice, growing 28,000 hectares of vegetables and continue taking care of 78,800 hectares of fruit trees.

According to forecast, the meteorological and hydrological situation is not favorable, the rainy season comes later and the rainfall is less than the previous year; the situation of pests and diseases is likely to be complicated, the consumption market is difficult, etc... Thus, Tien Giang province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requires farmers to comply with the seasonal calendar, using high quality seeds to produce, etc...

In addition, the Department of Agriculture also recommends the sectors including irrigation, plant protection and agricultural extension should strengthen coordination with local authorities to consolidate the irrigation system, forecast pest situation, organize workshops, transfer farming techniques progress, promoting the consumption of agricultural products,... for the production to achieve the highest economic efficiency.
