The Go Cong coastal region promotes the potential of aquaculture export

ABO - Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong coastal districts are actively promoting the potential of coastal aquaculture and estuary of the Tien River to create sources of agricultural products with export processing value, helping farmers to increase more income.

According to local report, from the beginning of the year, the whole region has raised nearly 5,000 hectares of shrimp, 2,260 hectares of clam. People have harvested nearly 9,000 tons of commercial shrimp and over 7,000 tons of meat clams. In 2019, Go Cong coastal districts strive to expand the aquaculture area to nearly 13,000 hectares, of which shrimp farming area is nearly 10,500 hectares, the rest is raising clams and mollusks of two pieces. The production of brackish and saltwater aquaculture in 2019 will reach nearly 65,000 tons, including nearly 45,000 tons of shrimp and 20,000 tons of commercial clams.

Tien Giang has a coastline of about 32 km and two large estuaries Soai Rap, Cua Tieu as well as two coastal districts of Go Cong Dong, Tan Phu Dong with the big potential on marine economic development, especially aquaculture and fishing. For farming, Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong districts advocate to exploit the potential of mudflats and the advantages of brackish and saline water sources to raise suitable objects with high economic values: clam, tiger shrimp, shrimp ... create raw materials for export processing industry, solving jobs and income for disadvantaged farmers as well as building and replicating effective business models.

Implementing these above objectives, coastal communes have shaped concentrated aquaculture farming areas such as raising shrimp in Tan Dien commune, Tan Thanh commune, Kieng Phuoc commune (Go Cong Dong district), and clam farming in Tan Thanh commune (Go Cong Dong district), etc...

In order to help farmers develop the potential for aquaculture in coastal areas, the concerned industries have paid attention to the training and transfer of agricultural science and technology, building and replicating advanced and effective farming models, etc… Specifically, from the beginning of the year, localities in the region have organized 53 training and technology transfer courses to attract nearly 2,000 farmers.

Thanks to the development of shrimp farming and clam farming, the agriculture and rural areas have been reformed. Tan Thanh commune (Go Cong Dong district) was recognized as a new rural commune in 2018. Go Cong Dong district also strives to launch the first new rural district of Tien Giang province by 2020.
