The Go Cong freshwater project area has a total natural area of 54,000 hectares, of which production area is 42,000 hectares, with about 25,000 hectares for rice cultivation.
According to professional forecasts, in the 2020 dry season, the total amount of water from the upstream of the Mekong River to the Mekong Delta region is short supply so the drought and saline intrusion situation in the Tien Giang province will be very high and serious.
Through the survey, it is shown that the sluices are operated safely by Tien Giang Exploiting Irrigation Works One Member Co., Ltd, some of them have been repaired and maintained to prevent saline intrusion. Particularly for some sewer projects due to the unsafe structure, the company implements the measure of fading and filling up the soil, treating leaks to ensure a thorough prevention of salinity.
The delegation surveyed the rice-growing region along the Tra River with about 7,000 hectares of autumn-winter rice and about 20 days to be harvested. It will surely sow the winter-spring crop of 2019-2020 later than the general season schedule so there is most risk of severe water shortage from mid to late crop. For this particular area, the agriculture sector recommends that farmers cut winter-spring crops or switch crops appropriately to reduce the damage that could occur during the 2020 dry season.
