Nghia Hung Canal inaugurated to improve waterway transport
ABO/NDO- The Ministry of Transport has inaugurated the Nghia Hung Canal, which links the Day and Ninh Co Rivers in Nam Dinh Province, under a project to enhance inland waterway transport throughout the region.
The project has a total cost of 107.19 million USD, of which 78.74 million was provided by the World Bank.
The key component of the 1.18-kilometre-long canal project is a lock that is 179 metres long, 17 metres wide and 10.5 metres high, allowing the passage of vessels up to 3,000 tonnes.

The project also includes a bridge running across the canal.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony on July 25, Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Xuan Sang underlined the importance of the project, which allows cargo ships to travel further inland and cuts the travel distance by 100 kilometres compared to road transport.
The canal will help reduce transport costs and promote Nam Dinh Province’s socio-economic development, he added.
Construction on the canal project began in March 2021 and it was completed on schedule in June 2023, despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is one of the most complex transport projects implemented by the Ministry of Transport, with a combination of roads, waterways and irrigation components.
