June and second quarter CPI see sharp rises year-on-year

ABO/NDO- Viet Nam’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) in June 2025 increased by 0.48% from the previous month and by 3.57% year-on-year. This was mainly due to the unusual surge in prices of housing maintenance materials—particularly sand, stone, and bricks—and higher fuel prices in line with global trends.

The indexes were released in a press conference on the socio-economic situation in the second quarter of the first half of 2025, held by the General Statistics Office (GSO) under the Ministry of Finance, on July 5.
Specifically, the CPI rose in 10 out of 11 commodity and service groups. The transport group recorded the sharpest increase at 1.66%, while education saw the smallest rise at 0.01%. The post and telecommunications group was the only one with CPI decrease of 0.02%.

The average CPI in the second quarter rose by 3.31% year-on-year. The average CPI for the first half of 2025 increased by 3.27% compared to the same period in 2024.

The food and catering services group saw a price increase of 3.69%, contributing 0.24 percentage points to the overall CPI rise. Notably, pork prices jumped 12.75% due to limited supply and heightened demand during holidays and festivals, adding 0.43 percentage points to overall CPI. Food prices overall rose by 4.15%.

The housing, electricity, water, fuel, and construction materials group increased by 5.73%, contributing 1.08 percentage points to CPI. This was driven by higher rental prices and housing maintenance materials. Household electricity prices rose by 5.51% due to increased demand and average retail price adjustments by EVN on October 11, 2024, and May 10, 2025, adding 0.18 percentage points to CPI.

Prices in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare services group rose sharply by 13.87%, contributing 0.75 percentage points to CPI. This was due to healthcare service price adjustments under Circular No. 21/2024/TT-BYT issued by the Ministry of Health on October 17, 2024.

Household appliances and equipment prices rose by 1.6%, adding 0.11 percentage points to CPI.

The other goods and services group increased by 6.6%, contributing 0.23 percentage points to CPI. This was mainly driven by a 4.71% increase in personal care items and a 17.26% rise in public notarisation fees, insurance, and other services.

Notably, the first six months of 2025 rose by 3.27% year-on-year thanks in part to mitigating factors. The transport group CPI declined by 3.63%, pulling overall CPI down by 0.35 percentage points, with fuel prices down by 12.56%. The post and telecommunications group also saw a 0.45% decrease, reducing CPI by 0.01 percentage points, largely due to lower prices of older-generation mobile phones.
