Oc Eo culture's golden items collection sets Vietnam record

A collection of ancient golden items of Oc Eo culture that were found at Go Thap archaeological and architectural site in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has been recognised as the largest of its kind in Vietnam.

The collection of ancient golden items of Oc Eo – Go Thap culture has been recognised as the largest of its kind.

The collection’s objects truthfully reflect the material, spiritual and religious life of people of Oc Eo culture. Golden sheets were carved with patterns associated with Gods including Vishnu Goddess (a main sect of Hinduism), Nandin (Cow Goddess), Varaha (Boar-faced God), Garuda (King of birds), snake Shesha and turtle Kurma.

They were also decorated with the images of wheels, tridents, crescent moon and lotus.

The collection consists of various jewelries including rings, earrings and a necklace dating back to the first – sixth century AD.

The collection possesses great historical, scientific and cultural value and is considered typical of Oc Eo – Go Thap culture.

The Dong Thap provincial Museum submitted a dossier to the Prime Minister to recognize the collection as national treasures.

The Oc Eo civilisation, which is believed to have developed between the first and seventh century AD in the Mekong Delta region, has contributed numerous ancient objects to the list of national treasures including tools and religious statues.
