Hoang Nguyen Thanh defends 'king of mountain' crown

Hoang Nguyen Thanh from Binh Phuoc province defended his ‘king of mountain’ title at this year’s national cross-country mountain climbing tournament, conquering mount Ba Ra in Binh Phuoc’s Phuoc Long town on January 6.

Thanh was the fastest in the men’s senior professional 7.7km race with a time of 34:07.44, followed by runner-up Do Van Luat from the Army team and third-place finisher Tran Van Loi of Binh Phuoc.

The ‘queen of mountain’ title went to the Army’s Hoang Thi Thanh who came out on top of the women’s senior professional 5.4km at 33 minutes and 33 seconds. The host’s Dang Cam Tu and Khanh Hoa’s Nguyen Thi Y Tien came in second and third place respectively.

Chau Ngoc Gian and Nguyen Thi Quynh Tram, both from Binh Phuoc, dominated the men’s and women’s youth professional events, helping the host team claim the overall championship title with a total of three gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

The Army team finished second overall with two gold, two silver and four bronze medals, while the third-place position went to Khanh Hoa.

The 11th annual tournament brought together nearly 1,000 athletes from 20 teams across the country, including 200 competing in the professional division and another 800 participating in the amateur section. Eight sets of medals and VND200 million in total prize money were up for grabs.
