Nghe An controlled the game right from the first blow of the whistle, constantly attacking Gia Lai from both wings.

Their scoring efforts promptly paid off with a seventh-minute opener by Manh Hung who skewed a cunning volley in the area leaving no chance for goalkeeper Minh Nhat to defend.

Gia Lai came close to equalising the score four minutes later but Hoang Thien’s free-kick unluckily struck the post.

The remainder of the match saw Nghe An dominate possession, with the ball constantly kept on the guests’ side.

It was not until the 72nd minute that the advantage was doubled for the host team. Taking a convenient pass by Tuan Tai, Phi Son blasted a powerful long-range strike from 20 metres out that well and truly escaped any effort from goalie Minh Nhut to block.

With this victory, Nghe An jumped to fourth in the standings with 17 points while Gia Lai temporarily stood in 12th place with just seven points after nine games.

Becamex Binh Duong edged out Dong Nai 2-1 on Sunday to defend their top spot with 21 points, two points above second-place Thanh Hoa, who beat Dong Thap 3-1 the same day, and four more than third-place Dong Tam Long An, who also recorded a narrow 1-0 win over XSKT Can Tho.

The remaining ninth-round matches ended up in 1-1 draws including SHB Da Nang – Sanna Khanh Hoa, Quang Ninh Coal – QNK Quang Nam, and Hanoi T&T-LG Hai Phong.
