Quach Cong Lich named Vietnam's flag bearer at the 28th SEA Games

Quach Cong Lich, a member of the Vietnamese athletics team, has been chosen to hold the national flag leading the Vietnam sports delegation at the opening ceremony of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore on June 5.

Earlier, Cong Lich and swimming star Hoang Quy Phuoc were the two candidates recommended for the honour as they met all the criteria – appearance, achievements and prestige – set for a flag bearer, to represent the image and status of the Vietnamese sports.

Quy Phuoc was initially named for this year’s position as he outplayed Cong Lich in terms of international achievements, winning the 2011 and 2013 SEA Games gold medals. Phuoc was also Vietnam’s flag bearer at the previous SEA Games in Myanmar.

Leaders of the swimming team, however, put forward their recommendation for Phuoc’s withdrawal in the last minutes, with the aim of keeping his physical strength at his best for the SEA Games competition on the morning of June 6. This proposal was then approved by leaders of the Vietnam sports contingent, which meant the flag bearing honour was granted to Cong Lich.

Cong Lich is known as brother of famous sprinter Quach Thi Lan, who brought home a silver medal for Vietnam from the 17th Asian Games in the Republic of Korea last year.

Lich broke the 10-year national record lasting in the men’s 400m dash not long ago, and he is anticipated to create breakthroughs in the 400m and 400m hurdles at the upcoming 28th SEA Games.
