Wushu victories add gold medals to Vietnam's tally

Wushu martial artists Hoang Van Cao and Nguyen Van Tai secured two gold medals on Monday night, wrapping up a prolific day of competition for the wushu team with a total of three gold medals.

Cao beat Solis Francisco of the Philippines 2-0 in the men’s Sanda under-60kg final before Tai faced Myanmar opponent Tun Kyaw Lin, winning by the same score in the men’s Sanda under-65kg final half an hour later.

Earlier in the afternoon, Tran Xuan Hiep won Vietnam’s first wushu gold medal of the day coming out on top in the men’s optional broadsword final with 9.72 points.

Duong Thuy Vy, who secured the first gold for the wushu team on June 7, picked up one more silver medal today after ending up in second place in the women’s optional spear with 9.71 points.

The swimming team concluded competition on June 8 with no gold medals won, securing just two silver medals, won by Nguyen Thi Anh Vien in the women’s 100m freestyle and Tran Duy Khoi in the men’s 200m backstroke, and an additional bronze medal won by Anh Vien in the women’s 50m backstroke.

By 8.30pm today, Vietnam stood firmly in second place in the SEA Games medal standings with 26 golds, 12 silvers and 30 bronzes – 14 golds fewer than Singapore and three ahead of Thailand, who are currently sitting in third-place.
