Vietnam snatch easy win as VTV Women's Volleyball Cup opens

Vietnam got off to a good start at the annual VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup, which kicked on July 25 in southern Bac Lieu province, after securing a comfortable straight-sets win over the Philippines.

The 2015 tournament, jointly organised by national broadcaster VTV and the Volleyball Federation of Vietnam, sees the participation of six teams, including Vietnam, U23 Thailand, the Philippines, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and two clubs from China: Liaoning and Nanjing University.

Vietnam beat the Philippines 25-16 25-18 25-15 while the DPRK, the favourite for this year’s Cup title, and Liaoning also scored convincing wins against Nanjing and U23 Thailand respectively.

After the five-day round robin, the top four teams will go through to the semi-finals, which are scheduled for July 31, with the final clash taking place the following day.

The Cup winners will be awarded US$10,000 in cash while the second, third and fourth teams will receive US$7,000, US$5,000 and US$1,000 respectively, according to VTV’s Deputy Director Pham Viet Tien.

In addition to usual personal titles such as most valuable player, best outside spiker, best middle blocker, best libero and best setter, there will be an award called Miss Volleyball as a special feature of the VTC Cup.
