Tien Minh says goodbye to Vietnam Open GP 2015

Vietnam has had all of its players knocked out of the ongoing Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open Badminton Grand Prix 2015 in Ho Chi Minh City after its last representative, Nguyen Tien Minh lost 1-2 to Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng in the third round.

Despite receiving strong support from local fans, Minh started off poorly in the first set, lagging behind 3-5, 4-9 and 12-17 before losing the set with a final score of 15-21.

Minh, however, found his form in the second set scoring seven consecutive points to lead 7-0. Chong Wei Feng reduced the score by 6-7, but Feng’s impatience allowed his Vietnamese opponent to win the set 21-9.

In set three, Minh’s stamina started to wear thin providing Feng with an opportunity, which he made good use of, to claim the set 21-14 as well as an overall 2-1 victory, securing him a place in the quarterfinals.

With Minh’s defeat on Thursday night, the remaining stage of the 2015 Vietnam Open will only see competition among guest players.

The week-long event is taking place at Nguyen Du gymnasium in Ho Chi Minh City from August 24 to 30, as part of the system to accumulate qualification points for 2016 Olympic Games. It has gathered a record number of participants, with 350 badminton players from 23 countries and territories around the world in attendance.
