Vietnamese sprinter to compete in world championships
Sprinter Nguyen Thi Huyen will be the only Vietnamese representative at the 15th IAAF World Championships, scheduled to take place in Beijing, China from August 22 to 30.
Huyen will compete in the 400m hurdles event at this year’s world championships. |
Huyen will only compete in the 400m hurdles instead of two events as previously planned – the 400m dash was dropped.
At the recent 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, the Nam Dinh-born woman excelled beyond expectation winning two individual and one team gold medals.
She claimed top spot in the 400m hurdles with a best time of 56.15 seconds, breaking the 20-year Games record of 56.78. The sparkling result also helped Huyen surpass the 2016 Olympic B standard of 56.20 seconds, making her the first Vietnamese track and field athlete to win an official ticket to Brazil next year.
Huyen went on to take top honour in the women’s 400m dash. She clocked a final time of 52.00 seconds, smashing the Games record and meeting the 2016 Olympic standard for this event (52.00 seconds).
The world championships in Beijing will provide a good opportunity for Huyen to test her abilities and accumulate experience for her Olympic campaign in Rio de Janeiro next year.
