Vietnamese movies compete at Luang Prabang festival

Two Vietnamese films including “Chang trai nam ay” (Dandelion) and “Dap canh giua khong trung (Flapping in the middle of nowhere) will be screened at the 2015 Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF).

“Chang trai nam ay” is directed by Nguyen Quang Huy. The movie is inspired by the true story of an ill-fated singer and his friendship with others. Based on the biography ‘Bat dau tu mot ket thuc’ (Starting from an end), the film features the battle against brain tumor by the singer. The film praises friendship, love and optimism that can still be found even though life is hard.

The work also marks the second time that director Nguyen Quang Huy has been invited to the LPFF after his film “Than tuong” (Idol) last year.

“Dap canh giua khong trung” is written and directed by Nguyen Hoang Diep. The movie tells about Huyen, a teenage girl who gets pregnant from a young loafer and finds herself forced to fall into prostitution in order to save money for an abortion. Ironically, the only customer who is willing to pay is a man who is obsessed by pregnant women. The situation becomes even more complicated because this man makes Huyen so happy that she almost forgets that there is a baby growing inside of her.

The movie has received mostly favorable reviews from critics and has been screened at several movie festivals across the world.

The LPFF is held annually at the Handicraft Market at Luang Prabang of Laos. This is a traditional celebration during the month of December.

This film festival showcases and gives appreciation on the Southeast Asian cinemas, thus opening a chance of sharing creative film-making ideas, techniques and trends. This year, the organisers of the LPFF selected 28 films from the countries in the region to be screened during the festival.

The festival taking place from December 5th - 9th, will also offers free film workshops and discussions for all the amateur and local film enthusiasts.
