T&T 1 and Petrosetco crowned team champions

The team events of the 2016 Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championship concluded on the evening of May 12, with T&T 1 and Petrosetco Ho Chi Minh City crowned the respective men’s and women’s overall champions.

The brilliant performance of young talent Nguyen Anh Tu powered T&T 1 on to a glorious 3-1 victory against the Army team 1 in the men’s finals on Thursday night.

After teammate Nguyen Trung Kien lost the opening game to reigning men’s singles champion Dinh Quang Linh, Anh Tu restored parity for T&T 1 claiming a victory over defending men’s singles runner-up Le Tien Dat.

The third singles match saw veteran Tran Tuan Quynh finish off Van Nam 3-0 with ease to put T&T 1 ahead 2-1.

The fourth clash witnessed an encounter between the leading hopes of both teams, Nguyen Anh Tu and Dinh Quang Linh. Despite lagging behind, Anh Tu fought back strongly to equalise 1-1 and 2-2 before claiming the decisive set 11-5 for an aggregate victory of 3-2, thereby gifting T&T 1 with a resounding 3-1 triumph against the Army team 1.

Earlier, T&T 1 showed off their strengths overcoming Vicem Hoang Thach Hai Duong 2 in the quarterfinals and Vicem Hoang Thach Hai Duong 1 in the semifinals.

On the women’s side, Petrosetco HCM City edged out Hanoi 3-2 in the semifinals to set up a final clash with the Ministry of Public Security team. With two wins by Mai Hoang My Trang against Phan Hoang Tuong Giang and Nguyen Thi Viet Linh, and another by Thanh Thu over Huong Chi, Petrosetco secured an aggregate 3-1 victory against Ministry of Public Security to successfully defend their team championship title.

The tournament will continue today with matches of the doubles events to be played.
