The exhibition was held jointly by the Hue Relics Conservation Centre, the National Archives Centre I in Hanoi, the National Archives Centre IV in Da Lat, the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Scientific and Cultural Activities Centre, the Bac Giang provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ha Tinh Museum and the Lieu Quan Buddhism Culture Centre.
The event was held as part of activities in response to the 7th General Meeting of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific, and International Museum Day (May 18).
The exhibition provides an overview of four documentary heritages recognised by the UNESCO Memory of the World, including 82 stone steles honouring doctoral candidates in Hanoi’s Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam (the Temple of Literature) during the Le-Mac Dynasty (16th -18th century); Nguyen Dynasty’s royal administrative documents (1802-1945); wood-blocks of the Nguyen Dynasty; and a collection of wooden blocks with engraved Buddhist sutras at Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Bac Giang province.
According to Dr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Hue Relics Conservation Centre, Memory of the World was launched in 1992 with the aim of recognising significant documentary heritages in a similar fashion to the way UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention and World Heritage List recognises significant natural and cultural sites.
