Minh needed just 38 minutes to claim two sets of 21-13, 21-17 against Ueda, thus stretching his winning record over the Japanese player to 3-0.

Next up for the Vietnamese star will be a second-round clash with Jeon Hyeok-jin from the Republic of Korea, who eased past host representative Simon Wing Hang Leung 21-5, 21-6 in another match the same day.

On the women’s side, top Vietnamese female shuttler Vu Thi Trang impressively saw off a much higher rated Liang Xiaoyu of Singapore 21-18, 21-17 in order to set up a round-two match against third seeded Chinese Li Xuerui.

Earlier on June 5, Minh and Trang were crowned men’s and women’s singles champions at the Ciputra Hanoi-Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge 2016 after winning the final matches against Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei and Saena Kawakami of Japan respectively.

The 2016 Australian Super Series is the sixth of the 13 tournaments under the 2016 BWF Super Series season, offering US$750,000 in total prize money.
