Top shuttler eases into 2016 Ciputra Hanoi second round

Vietnam’s tennis ace Nguyen Tien Minh hardly broke a sweat to beat Indian opponent Aditya Joshi 2-0 in their men’s singles opener on June 1, advancing into the second round of the Ciputra Hanoi - Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge 2016.

Experienced Tien Minh needed just 30 minutes to see Joshi off in two straight sets of 21-18 and 21-8.

Next up for Minh will be a round-two clash with Chiang Jiann Shiarng of Malaysia.

Minh’s girlfriend Vu Thi Trang also made the second round of the women’s singles event where she will meet Ritupama Das of India.

The annual tournament is taking place at Cau Giay Gymnasium in Hanoi from May 31 to June 5, bringing together more than 300 competitors from 17 countries and territories around the world.

Vietnam is being represented by 54 players in the men’s and women’s singles and doubles events and the mixed doubles category, with its prominent players Nguyen Tien Minh (world no. 32) and Vu Thi Trang (world no. 47) named as the top seed in the men’s singles and no. 2 seed in the women’s singles respectively.

A total cash prize of US$17,500 will be up for grabs, including a stake of US$1,312 to be awarded to each singles champion and three stakes of US$1,382 each for the winners of the doubles events.
