International badminton tourney kicks off in Ho Chi Minh City

The International Badminton Championships Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open 2016 officially kicked off on July 18, drawing the participation of 300 players from 28 countries and territories.

They are competing in five events including the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, for total prizes worth US$55,000.

At the event, Vietnam sent their strongest team ever with 23 players, in which Nguyen Tien Minh and Vu Thi Trang have secured two places in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The event has also attacted strong international players such as Hu Yun (Hong Kong, the world No.12), Ng Ka Long Angus (Hong Kong, the world No.13), Wei Nan (Hong Kong, the world No.17), Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk (Thailand, the world No.24), and Nguyen Tien Minh (the world No.33)

Hsu Ya Ching (Chinese Taipei, the world No.33), Yip Pui Yin (Hong Kong, the world No.34), Cheung Ngan Yi (Hong Kong, the world No.38), and Vu Thi Trang (the world No.44) will be leading candidates for the title of the women’s singles.

In the first matches of the men’s singles, Nguyen Dinh Tuan Kiet lost to Phanuwat Srimanta from Thailand while Ho Nguyen Vinh Quang was defeated by Chang En Chia from Chinese Taipei.

The tournament will run until July 24.
