Translated works bring Vietnamese, Russian literature closer

Three more Russian classical literary works translated into Vietnamese were released to the public in Hanoi on July 22.

The three publications include ‘The Gambler’ by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, ‘The Forest’ by Alexander Ostrovsky, and ‘Sea Stories’ by Konstantin Stanhiukovich.

A collection of short stories by 21 Vietnamese contemporary writers translated into Russian was also introduced to readers on the occasion.

The publication of the books is the fifth phase of a project on translating literature from Russian into Vietnamese and vice versa, which has been jointly carried out since 2012 by the Vietnam-Russia Literature Fund, Vietnam’s The Gioi (World) Publisher, the Literature Publishing House of Vietnam and Russia’s Lokid Premium Publishing House.

Under the project, 25 Russian literature works have been translated into Vietnamese.

Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Shafinskaya Natalia said the publication of the books has not only helped introduce world-famous literary works of Russia and Vietnamese masterpieces to peoples in the two countries but also contributed to boosting bilateral co-operation in literature.

Echoing the same view, writer and translator Hoang Thuy Toan said that the project has benefited Vietnamese and Russian readers in providing an opportunity to learn more about the cultures in each others country, thus consolidating mutual understanding between the two peoples.

He also spoke of numerous difficulties faced by the board of translators during the implementation of the project and called for further support from relevant agencies from the two countries to raise the project’s efficiency.
