Can Tho, who stood at bottom of the standings ahead of the match, made good use of the home field advantage to take the lead after five minutes, with Henry heading the ball to Nsi who skewed a volley past the goalkeeper for an early opener.
Captain Chi Cong doubled the hosts’ lead 13 minutes later heading home Quang Tinh’s right-wing corner kick.
With time running out, Saigon put up the pressure seeking to narrow the score. It was not until the first-half injury time that their efforts paid off as Van Ngo’s strike hit the leg of teammate Patrick before being deflected into the net.
The second half took place fiercely with a series of tit for tat plays occurring between players of the two teams. Nine minutes after the hour mark, Van Thuan drove a sudden rocket from a distance of 30 metres straight into keeper Buu Ngoc’s net at the surprise of home fans at Can Tho stadium, thereby igniting Saigon’s hopes for a resurgence.
However, Nsi and substitute Van Quan let the guests down with a header in the 71st minute and a long-range strike in injury time, which sealed a resounding 4-2 victory for the home side.
The home win lifted Can Tho up to 13th position in the standings with five points, beating Long An, who suffered a 2-5 defeat to Ho Chi Minh City, to bottom place with one point fewer.
FLC Thanh Hoa safeguarded their reign with 14 points despite a goalless draw against SHB Da Nang, while defending champions Hanoi FC remained at third position with 11 points following a 1-1 tie with Hai Phong.
QNK Quang Nam held on to second position with 12 points after a 2-2 draw against Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai shocked everyone with a narrow 1-0 win over the 2015 V-League champions Becamex Binh Duong, while Quang Ninh Coal made light work of Song Lam Nghe An with a 2-1 victory.
