An has been given the honour not only because of his ideal height of 1.87 metres, but also due to the exceptional achievements that he has obtained at international competitions in recent years.
The 25-year-old fencer won two gold medals at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore two years ago, before being crowned champion at the 2015 Asian U23 Fencing Championship and securing a bronze medal at the Asian Fencing Championship which took place last year.
Furthermore, An won an official berth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at which he was also named Vietnam’s flag bearer.
With the impressive form he has demonstrated recently, Vu Thanh An is expected to continue defending his reign in the men’s sabre category at the upcoming 29th SEA Games.
